Amid the sharp new apartment blocks, the sleek cafés and the bright bars of Green Point in Cape Town lies a stretch of prime property against Lion’s Head. Somewhere between quaint and majestic, these rows of double-storeyed, detached homes are both an echo of the city’s early days and a covetable symbol of contemporary living. The site is conveniently close to the city centre, it represented an opportunity to combine a open flowing space with a more modern aesthetic. Holloway & Hound revamped the existing building by adding a glass frontage and turning the floors into sprawling, luxurious open plan living areas. A double-volume entrance welcomes visitors with awe-inspiring views of the V&A Marina and the CBD, while the upper-level lounge and deck provide endless panoramas of the harbour and Robben Island. An island was placed in the kitchen to add more functionality and workspace. The island forms an important part of the kitchen triangle, aiding in the process of baking, prepping food and cooking. By adding seating at the island, the kitchen becomes a more sociable space for eating and entertaining. The design of the house is centred around its textured layers of smooth, grey concrete, exposed brickwork, stone and liberal use of rough timber. The living areas spill out to a fabulous deck, where warmer months invite casual braai’s while gazing out over the city lights by night. On the lower level is the ultimate entertainment space, complete with a pool table, which leads to the lawn and swimming pool. There’s a contemporary take on a boma in the garden.
